Quite a Drought

I can't believe how long it's been since my last post. I apologize but sometimes life just gets in the way. I haven't been doing a lot of sewing, didn't even do my marathon Christmas pj's. Hopefully 2012 will be better. I finally finished this jacket, which I started last year and had so many problems with the lining I just had to walk away.

I took a deep breath and tackled it again and I'm happy with the finished product, although I'm calling it my coat of many mistakes.

It marinated for so long I can't find the pattern, it's a project runway but I don't remember the number.
The fabric is a herringbone corduroy, my love for the fabric made me persist.

I'll leave you with a picture of our ugly Christmas sweater party at work. We had a blast.

Hopefully more sooner rather than later.

Jump Starting my Mojo

Butterick 5251 out of Navy stretch knit from Hancock, the tank top is Vogue 1167, I have enough Vogue patterns that I'm sure I'll be using a lot of them in my upcoming projects. Navy like black doesn't photograph well but this came out really nice and was a quick and easy project just want I needed.

I finally wore Vogue 1250 to church today, you will have to excuse the pictures I'm trying to learn to use my tripod. I can't remember the jacket pattern but it's Vogue.

I'm not crazy about the dress it's a little short for my taste and for church, more suited for a night out.
Hopefully this will motivate my Fall sewing which has been non-existent. I hope everyone had a great weekend.

It Really Is Better To Give

Blogger buddies are the best. I have received such sincere thank you's for the Vogue patterns, this one was sent from Sheila and she made it herself, love it.

No sewing but a little knitting, my sister made my niece a scarf out of this yarn and gave me the rest of it to make some matching mitts, I think they came out great even though I ran out of yarn and had to use a different yarn on the second thumb. I'm so proud of my sister I taught her to knit when I went to California in June and she's doing great.

I also made another Star Crossed Slouchy Beret, a pair of mitts and I'm working on a scarf to go to a wonderful young lady that lives in the Windy City.

I haven't done any real sewing since I got back from California, which is almost 3 weeks, I really, really need to sew, hopefully I will get at least one of these made this weekend.

We have managed to squeeze in a little Halloween fun, Halloween Haunt at Kings Island we get out of there before it gets dark because that's when it gets really scary.

Thanks again to all my wonderful followers I look forward to seeing what you make with your Vogue patterns whatever it is I know it will be fabulous just like you.

Just a little sewing

An oldie but a goodie, this is McCalls 5662, view F. This first time I made this pattern I made view C and noticed too late that the back was low cut, I like this version much better. Didn't have enough fabric to cut the front and back on the fold so there's a front and back seam but I still like it alot. The fabric is from my Wal-Mart stash, I think it was .50/yd.

Since this fabric is so thin I lined the bodice with my favorite--knit tricot.

I used my double needle on the neckline, sleeve and hem.

I also finished another pair of Butterick 5221, these are black linen. Wanted to show my RTW waistband trick, I put elastic in the back which allows for a snug but comfortable fit.

They're basic black and don't photograph well but you get the idea, this is my third pair so I guess it makes it a TNT pattern.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Vogue pattern giveaway I hope to have them in the mail this week.

Paying it Forward

I stopped by JoAnn's to get some yarn to finish a hat for my sister, low and behold they had marked the Vogue patterns down to 4 for 1.00, yep you heard right 4 for 1.00. I didn't have time to browse but I went back on Monday and purchased quite a few.

76 to be exact, they were only .25 cents I couldn't talk myself out of any of them but I'm not that selfish, I plan to give away most of them on my blog. The plan is to upload a pic to my flickr album and let my current followers choose until they're gone. I hope to have this done by the weekend so please check back.

There's some of everything in there, I bought every plus size I found because I know those are sometimes hard to find, hopefully there will be something for everyone. This is my way of saying thanks for following my blog and all your encouraging comments.

This and That

Where's the love, apparently this post made Schey scream, there are a lot of people who aren't happy with this dress but there are just as many who are so I'm going to reserve my opinion until I actually wear it. I remembered this Vogue jacket that I made a couple of years ago, which provides another styling option in cooler weather.

Speaking of Vogue, the JoAnns store that's 5 minutes from my house is closing, all the Vogue patterns were 1.99, I purchased a few last week and went back this morning and got these.

I know the last time I posted that I was incorrect they were 3.99 so here's the receipt.

They are also selling some store fixtures, pattern drawers are going for 20.00 I had to resist purchasing one, my current file cabinet is sufficient and that would only make me buy more patterns.
My friend's daughter made this adorable remote caddy for me, she's 11 and sews with her Grandmother, maybe one day I will get to do the same I've given up on my daughter ever catching the sewing bug. I love the fabric she knows I LOVE watermelon.

Still early in the weekend I hope to get some sewing done. Just kidding about Vogue 1250 everybody's entitled to their own opinion, please don't be offended.

What can I say about this dress that hasn't already been said on PatternReview. It's freaking great and if you haven't made it yet all I can say is, "what are you waiting for". Of course black doesn't photograph well but if you look at the numerous Pattern reviews you can see the details.

I made it to wear with my McCalls wrap that I made last year, I love this wrap and don't get to wear it often, I definitely think it's a winner with this dress. My only complaint, which isn't the pattern's fault is it's a little short for my taste but that was due to fabric constraints, nonetheless I will rock this with some black stockings and nice sparkly black heels. I won't be wearing it for awhile but I promise to take lots of pictures when I do.

I lined the dress with nude knit tricot and it gives the dress just the right amount of stability, I will still wear my spanx because this dress fits like a glove.

I also finished the layout tank for my DD. I started this in June while we were on vacation, I've also been working on the broken rib tank for myself so this really didn't take that long to complete.

I used self-striping cotton Sinfonia yarn, I really like how the pattern developed. I added a 1 1/2 inch ribbing to the botton and made the neckline a little wider but other than that no major changes.

I have a couple of other things cut out and waiting so stay tuned to see what develops.

How to Bling Out a Zipper Pull

First I have to say that I'm terrible at tutorials but I'm going to try and tell you how I make a custom zipper pull. I know the beaders out there can provide additional tips, I do not bead I just thought it would be really cool to have a little extra something on the back of my maxi dress and this is what I came up with.

The first time I made one I used an O-ring which really didn't work out that well because the bling still needs to function as a zipper pull, now I use a lobster claw and these niffy little end caps w/loop to secure the beads. I know you can get beading tools at the craft store but I purchased these from Home Depot and they work great.

I've only done this using an invisible zipper and as an added plus it distracts from my not so perfect zipper insertion. Remove the zipper pull but leave the little metal loop this will be used to attach the lobster claw.

Secure the wire to the lobster claw using the jewerly and craft end caps/loop (that's what it says on the package), add your beads and secure the last bead with another end cap, that's all there is to it, until I get more tips from blogland I'm sure it could be improved, I think it might work better with some type of flexible cord instead of wire but that will have to wait until the next maxi dress.

I still have to hem the dress I'm debating on doing a lace hem because it will show through the sheer fabric, hopefully I will have pics soon.

Didn't get any sewing done, this was the Macy's Music Fesitval weekend and if you've been reading my blog you know I attend both nights every year, I will do a separate post about that but Friday night was AWESOME, Saturday was good too Maze never disappoints and El Debarge seems to be on the mend.

Thanks for all your kind comments on my wadder shorts, as you can see I'm over it and moving on.

This is Simplicity 2362, Andrienne made a beautiful dress from the same fabric last year. I just couldn't decide what to do with this fabric until I saw Simplicity 2362. Since this is a sheer fabric I underlined it with broadcloth and lined it with mystery lining fabric. I was afraid it would make the dress heavy but it flows beautifully.

All that's left to do is insert the zipper and hem it. I'm going to repeat my previous blinged out zipper pull with these pretties.

This is the first one I made, I've learned a few things since then so this one will be better.

Initially I was going to wear this to the Macy's Music Festival but I have another function to attend so I'm going to save it. I don't want to risk wearing it and having it snag.

The Good and The Bad

Lets start with the good, McCalls 5977, it's view D without the sleeves. I didn't have enough fabric for the full width of the ruffle but I still like it.

I'm trying to sew from my stash, I can't remember when/where or what type of fabric this is but this is a great summer top. I didn't have enough fabric for the sleeves, I'm sure with the weather we've been having I won't miss them.

Now for the bad, McCalls 5391, I was very happy with the plaid matching on these shorts, I even cheated to get the side front to line up.

Then I tried them on, to quote Sheila, "if it doesn't fit you must acquit". The fit was atrocious and I didn't have anymore fabric to come up with a creative save so these are wadders. I have now altered the pattern with a full seat adjustment, my first. I have some more fabric picked out and will give this pattern another try.

I hope to get a lot of sewing done this weekend but I also need to strip some wallpaper, we'll see how that goes.

No Sewing but some Pics

I finally had a photographer so I made the most of it and took pictures of my recent FOs. Here's Butterick 5493, this is a great summer top.

This is Vogue 7756 I made last summer but didn't care for the high waisted pants (Butterick 5250) that I made to go with it, the navy linen pants are great, the linen fabric is sheer, lined with broadcloth they're perfect for a 100 degree day and that's what did my hair in.

Simplicity 2369, this top isn't good on a day like today, the knit is somewhat heavy but I'm sure I will get a lot of wear out of this top in the Fall.

Me and my co-workers at Target World, this was the first time I ever used a gun, the 22 wasn't bad, the 45 was scary but I love our Charlie Angels picture. Another co-worker teaches the concealed carry class and is a huge gun enthusiast, he rents out the shooting range once a year from 10-12 midnight that's how I spent my Friday night.

Happy 4th of July

Simplicity 2369, gifted fabric gray stretch knit (thank's again Trudi). Love this top, I was going to cut out the dress but didn't have enough so I made the top instead. View C with the buckle from view B.

My buckle is on the wrong side and I ain't changing it.

I've been meaning to make a pair of black leggins since the Over the Top challenge and I'm just now getting around to it. The pattern is Butterick 5514 circa 1991 so I'm sure it's OOP.

I didn't have enough fabric to make them ankle length so I let the fabric decide how long they would be and I'm really happy with the length, they are mid-calve.

Had to squeeze in some 4th of July fun, this band was pretty good, definitely old school but still fun.

This is the real reason we went to the park, little guy in the wife beater appears to be having his moment in the sun, my GS is of course wearing his Spiderman swim trunks.

Not much to say about this top, quick, easy and the fabric was free, thanks Trudi.

Another pair of Butterick 5221, more gifted fabric from Trudi. I did purchase the navy broadcloth lining, making the grand total for a lined pair of linen pants about $8.00, not bad.

I did a rolled hem on my serger for the ruffle.

Made fabric bindings.

Monday's are just better if you have a new outfit to wear.

Summer = Seersucker

Last year I made McCalls 5847 it was and continues to be my favorite summer dress but I think this might be this years favorite. Vogue 1236, it's a very simple dress but I love it.

Here it is with my white RTW jean jacket because I will freeze at work without it.

I added a lining which was pretty simple I used the facing as my guide and just sewed the white broadcloth to them.
I was going to make a coordinating belt but tried this white one and like it.

For the lingerie straps I used 1/4 inch elastic and tiny snaps, really glad I didn't skip this step.

All in all a great summer dress pattern.

I decided to take some pictures yesterday since I had a willing photographer.

My DD photographer said not to take this picture because I quote, "it looks like you're sticking your butt out" no need to that where it stays I just wanted to show how well the pants fit.

It looks like "smile" lines on the pants in this picture but it's just the way I'm standing.

I wore this to work today and got tons of compliments, Caron Spa yarn is an awesome Spring/Summer choice.

Playing it Safe

I played it safe and went with the off-white linen pants. The pattern is Butterick 5221 I made the capri's last year and really liked the fit. You can always use a pair of linen pants for summer.

These came out great, the only issue is an old one the pocket showing through. I should have used the lining fabric for the pocket facing.

I also made a tank top to wear under the sweater, I've put the pattern away and I don't remember the number but it is just your basic two pattern piece tank I did reduce the shoulder width so they wouldn't show and lowered the neckline. The fabric is 1.00/yd Wal-Mart stretch knit, it's very thin but worked well for this purpose.

The pants are wide leg which I like for summer, I hope to get a picture tomorrow.

I lined them with this dark beige cotton fabric, both were purchased from JoAnn's.

I do plan to make the skirt but it probably won't happen until next weekend. I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend.

Lets Vogue

I finished the striped top from the Spring/Summer Vogue and I'm very happy with it.

Instead of finishing the neck edge with single crochet I slip stitched in the back loop to bring in the neckline.

You have no idea how many different seaming techniques I tried before I finally just machine stitched it, duh.

I was really worried because if the stripes didn't match taking the seam out would have been a nightmare, thankfully they matched up nicely.

See the skirt the model is wearing I really like how it doesn't match and wanted a similar look without looking ridiculous.

I've been looking for a coordinating print fabric FOREVER and found this but I'm just not crazy about it and I really think it would be bordering on ridiculous. Maybe I should just take Julia's advice and go with a pair of neutral linen pants.

The garden is in, this year I did tomatoes, red, yellow and green bell peppers and green beans. We've had an awful lot of rain but everything seems to be doing ok.

Two seams on this sweater didn't really satisfy my need to sew, we'll have to see what else develops.

Chicago Take Two (Very picture heavy)

I was in Chicago again last weekend for my friends daughter's graduation. Here's little Ms. Ashley with all her senior attitude showing.

Here's the cute little girl I know, all grown up. Her dress was gorgeous, I'm sorry that I didn't get a picture of her prom dress it was red-carpet beautiful. The girl has style.

I had a great time in Chicago, these people are like family to me they adopted me when I moved to Chicago almost 30 yrs ago and have never let go. Then I had to get home.....
The bus broke down about 40 miles from Indianapolis and we had to wait 4 hours for them to send another bus from Chicago. I think this picture of the bus driver pretty much sums it up. BTW she was great. What should have been a 5 hr. trip turned into 12 hrs.

This is what the middle of nowhere looks like. Actually the bus driver was smart enough to pull into a truck stop that had a Subway so at least there were bathroom facilities and we could get something to eat.

I told everyone to smile and say "stranded". Everyone on the bus was great for the most part there were a few people who blew a gasket, a few people that were only going to Indy were able to have someone come pick them up but this was the fate for the rest of us, four hours at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere.

There was a couple that have been married for 61 years on the bus and a baby who became quite cranky, when she started to cry everybody on the bus would start to sing. Now when I hear a baby cry I break out with "Wheels on the Bus go round and round". At least I received a full refund and met some really great people.

After two weeks with no sewing I'm feeling a little twitchy I NEED to sew, hopefully I will get some done.

PR Weekend Review (pic heavy)

PR Weekend in Chicago was cold, wet, rainy and the most FUN I've had in a very long time. The goody bag was just that, full of great practical and useful gifts. I love the bag design.

Believe it or not I didn't buy any fabric. Since I didn't arrive until 7:30 on Friday I missed the shopping day which I was okay with because I really don't need any more fabric but I did go to my very first yarn shop.

I showed great restraint because I really don't need any more yarn but couldn't resist these purchases. The Snuggly baby bamboo was on sale for half price and I've wanted to try cascade yarn for quite awhile so I splurged on the two balls on the right. I've been trying to find the Eucalan no rinse wash forever, I was very happy to find it and PR Weekend attendees received a 20% discount.

I also didn't buy any fabric because I will be back in Chicago this coming weekend for a graduation. I took the MegaBus and got my tickets for PR Weekend for $10.00 each way, couldn't beat that, next week's tickets cost $15.00 each way. If you book far enough in advance you can get some great deals.

I can't remember this lady's name but she had the most amazing quilts, isn't that gorgeous.

I apologize that this picture is so dark but I just had to get a picture of Tina Wong's Halloween costume, she was an ear of corn, I loved it.

The pattern swap, someone said it was like feeding pigeons the women were quite excited. I got a few myself even though I didn't bring any as you can see there was more than enough.

Me and Deepika, she's a sweetheart. I had a lot of cute summer outfits planned for this weekend but the weather changed that, the Barney jacket held it's own against the windy city.

Andrea and Cenetta talking to the speaker-Angela Wolf, she was excellent. Very informative and personable. She answered all questions without any hesitation even when someone asked her how much she charges for her services. A question that I'm sure was on everyone's mine.

Andrea getting all the details. She is such a fun person I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with these ladies and meeting so many new people. Everyone was so nice, it was just an awesome weekend. I really hope to be able to attend next years.

Karen (Karen6790 on PR) I had to get a picture of her skirt. She's Andrea's co-worker, Andrea wore an Anthropologlie skirt to work, Karen took a picture and recreated the skirt and wore it to work after only 3 days, incredible.

I just want to say thanks to all of the wonderful, creative, talented, kind and funny women I met on Saturday for making PR weekend great. Kyle Burkhardt had the cutest purse the fabric is black and white with different patterns pieces it's from Alexander Henry's fabric collection it was just adorable as was the dress she was wearing I forget the pattern. I also had the chance to speak to Sheila of Sheilaz-CTK, Andrea called her while we were having lunch and we all got to say "Hi, wish you were here". I'm sure I've forgotten some names here but please forgive me I truly enjoyed everyone's company.

Happy Mother's Day

No sewing but I'm almost finished with the Vogue (Spring/Summer issue) #20 striped top. Not much to say about this pattern, easy to follow and so far I like the results. I love the coral with the vanilla.

Now if I could just find some coordinating fabric. I may take Julia's suggestion and go with linen pants.

These solved my blocking dilemma, so far so good. I did put a towel over them because if those colors bled onto my knitting it would be a very bad thing.

Last year I posted about "the best Mother's Day gift ever" well it's only fitting that you finally meet Tulip. I had her name wrong in the post. She's always the topic in every meeting and one day we were talking about how popular tutu's are and I said Tulip needs a tutu. I made this for her purely for the picture. Her "Mom" said she was dressed for the Royal Wedding but I think she needs a hat. BTW the rat freaked out when she tried to put it on her, she said it was really hard to get a good picture, I guess rats don't like tutu's after all.

I hope everyone has a great Mother's Day and no one gets a Tulip, unless that's what you want.

Taking a Cue from my Shoe

I purchased these shoes last year and never wore them because I didn't have anything to wear with them. I fixed that last night with another version of Simplicity 3896.

I used broadcloth and some trip from my stash, great quick top and now I can wear my shoes. (note to self, clean off the table and put my hair dryer away :-)

I know I'm not the only that does that, buy the shoes first and then make the outfit.

Free is Better

Both of this weekend's projects were made using gifted fabric. This is McCalls 5670, I'm sure it's out of print. The fabric is from Trudi's stash. I'm not sure what type of fabric this is but it has a lot of drape to it. I loved the pattern and feel of this fabric.

I've wanted to make this pattern for quite awhile, I was going to make a dress with this fabric but changed my mind at the last minute. The jacket is designed to be open at the bottom but I'm going to put some type of closure at the bottom so I can wear it alone.

Right now it's just pinned. I still have to add the sleeve facing and hem it. I lined it because the fabric needed some stability.

For the Bottoms Up Challenge I made Butterick 5222. I've tweaked this pattern to get a better fit.

This fabric was gifted to me by Ms. Peggy who I've never met, Ms. Peggy was a co-workers neighbor and I was the lucky recipient. I'm guessing that this fabric is probably as old as I am but it's a great weight for pants, if I had to guess I would say it's some type of polyester gabardine, my Mother would love these, I kinda like them myself.

McCalls 5384 Again

I finished the top to go with the skirt. It's view A, the fabric is embroidered which explains the slight shimmer.

I think it looks great with the skirt, I'm glad I went with this pattern.

This is the first time I made this pattern two summers ago. I used a sheer and I loved this version.

It's only Friday hopefully I will get some more sewing done. I'm having a ball with Trudi's stash she had some great fabrics.

Simplicity 2451

More gifted fabric from Trudi. I guess I should be happy she never really caught the sewing bug because I inherited her great stash. This is a navy/white striped stretch denim.

Didn't have a navy zipper. I added about 4 inches to the length because I wanted it to be a little longer than knee length for work.

Only having 1 yd of this fabric presented a Tim Gunn, "make it work" moment. I used some well wore denim for the waistband facing and I rather like the look with the white lining.

I still need to hem it and add the hook and eye closure, this will be my first bottom for the Bottoms Up Challenge. I'm so happy that the Over the Top Challenge morphed into this challenge I was having way to much fun for it to be over.

Delayed

My skirt that is, most of the day was spent making this for a co-worker's grand-daughter.

I stole this really cute idea of having the bloomers attached from Coles Creations.

Here it is with a huge flower which are extremely popular if I'm too believe Etsy. I think it would be cute for a picture but totally unpractical for wearing, it's just pinned on.

My first skirt for the BottomsUp Challenge. I only had 1 yd of this gifted fabric and knew I wanted to make a skirt or shorts for summer. I finally found a skirt pattern that would work. I'm making view C, the green one on the envelope.

I purchased this white embroidered fabric to make a blouse to go with the skirt, couldn't decide on a pattern but I'm leaning toward this one. I made it last year in a sheer and love it.

Andrienne made this a couple of years ago and I've wanted to make it ever since seeing hers but I think it may have to wait.

I can't believe that next Sunday is Easter but we don't have any plans so I may get some sewing done.

Easy as 1,2,3

It should say easy as 3,4 and 5 because that's the number of tops I've made for the Over the Top Challenge so far. This is Simplicity 3786, view A. I used more of Trudi's gifted fabric, I used hem tape for the trim. I like it a lot. This is Butterick 5217, view D. I admit it's awfully similair to the first black and white knit top I made but I like it anyway and it used up more of my stash. I told my girlfriends that we were to old to wear leggings but I might have to break my own rule because I think this top would look great with a pair of leggings.

And before you think that I only wear black and white, (which I do a lot) here's a pop of pink and white for summer. This is Simplicity 4076 view B, I just love a flutter sleeve on summer tops.

On all of the tops I cut a size 12, for this one I lengthened it 3 inches because I didn't like the top of the waistband length. I'm sure I will need to raise my arms while wearing this top and I don't like flashing people.

I don't know if this can count as part of the Over the Top Challenge but I have a baby shower to attend and whipped up this little onesie tutu. Apparently tutu's are all the rage on Etsy, selling for $25.00. After making this one I see why you need about a million yards of tulle but after figuring that out it was pretty easy. The little princess bling is an iron on.

I don't know if I will get any more tops made before the 15th but this has been a great jump start to my Spring sewing. Thanks again Faye for sponsoring this challenge.

Black & White

My second Over The Top Challenge top. Simplicity 3790 view D with the short sleeves from view E. I would have preferred the long sleeves because it's still quite chilly. The fabric was a remnant from a maxi dress I made over the summer, which I wore one time and gave to my DD. I like this simple top much better.

This top went together super fast, I've made almost every view from this pattern and the only one I didn't care for is the view with the inset, the fit was terrible.

Anywho this is probably the only sewing I will get done until the weekend.

Lets Get this Party Started

This will be my first "Over The Top" top. I'm participating in Faye's Over the Top Challenge. This is McCalls 6124, view A.

I attempted to make a blouse using this fabric and it was an epic fail, I cut a generous size 12 and it was way to small. I even tried to gift it to a tiny co-worker and it didn't fit her, I can't remember the pattern but it's noted in my database so I won't make that mistake again. This blouse was pretty quick and easy and best of all it fits. I still have to add the buttons/button holes.

I organized my crochet and knitting mags, they were driving me crazy stacked on my dresser. A co-worker shared this with me so I thought I would share. It's very simple but I didn't think of it until she showed me.

I got the magazine sleeves from Staples and the binders were free from work. Now they're all labeled and put away. I also got a dolly for my many bins of fabric, it makes it so much easier to just roll them out of my storage closet.

Here's the khaki version of McCalls 5523, view B again. Came out great, I even got the zipper on the left side, in the black I inserted it on the right side.

I lined it with this sunny yellow.

Which matched the RTW blouse I wore with it, too bad nobody knew but me.

I also added 1 inch elastic to the back which helps the waistband to lay flat.

Off to a good Start

My weekend got off to a great start with a delicious chocolate muffin and fresh strawberries. Why does chocolate and strawberries go together so well, yum. I've been trying to perfect this recipe for years and I think I finally got it, it's a hybrid of several that I've tried which were all lacking but with a few changes I made it my own. If you're interested I will post the recipe.

My GS will turn 8 on Tuesday so we started celebrating with a trip to the circus.

I wasn't too excited about going but we had a really good time.

Even with all the over prices extra's.

On my needles and my nerves, the pattern is coming along fine but I'm having the darnest time trying to find a coordinating print fabric for a skirt, I may have to resort to online and request a few swatches to make sure it matches. I took the yarn to 3 different fabric stores with no luck.

I love the coral with the off-white and really want some type of print for the skirt. I almost let my subscription to Vogue lapse but the last few issues have had some great patterns.

Also on my needles, the double V cardigan from Interweave Knits Spring 2010 issue, I did let this subscription laspe because the patterns were full of errors and extremely aggravating to a novice but I'm determined to make this sweater and I finally got my swatch right.

I think it will be lovely with this navy/white pique for Spring/Summer.

I also cut out another skirt, McCalls 5523, view D again. This time out of some khaki fabric that I thought was ruined by this terrible crease mark but with some creative folding I was able to get the skirt cut out. I am lining this one, the black one is great but I should know better, I hate having to find a slip.

I'm off to book my reservation for PR Chicago weekend in May. Let me know if you're going to attend I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. I will be arriving late on Friday so will join the festivities on Saturday, I will be staying with friends.

Basic Black

I didn't have a black skirt so I fixed that wardrobe gap with McCalls 5523, which has been done to death on PatternReview and now I know why, it's a great pattern. Quick, easy and a lot of different options. I made view B with the twill remnant from the capris I made last summer.

Of course black is impossible to photograph so you'll just have to take my word for it when I say it came out great.

Part of my bring on Spring theme, I purchased these two pique pieces from Hancock.

And a few patterns that fit the theme.

A few infant patterns to make and sell over the summer. We'll see how that goes.

I promise this will be the last time you have to look at my socks, at least now there is a pair.

Maybe When I Retire

I will have an Etsy shop. A co-worker said how his wife was busting their budget by buying stuff on Etsy for their newborn daughter, when he showed me what it was I couldn't believe what they were selling for, so in an effort to save him some money and maybe make a little myself, I whipped up several pairs of these "fancy pants".

I would much rather have spent that time making something for myself but it made them happy. The hair bands are nothing more than a huge flower clipped to a store bought band.

We've had 6 babies born in as many months, 3 girls, 3 boys so there's definitely a market for them but I don't know that I will make anymore. I do enjoy making little girls clothes I may make a few sun dresses and sell them over the summer.

I know you guys are tired of seeing my one sock but I wanted to share my .99 sock blockers. Please forgive me but I don't remember where I saw them.

Gotta love Hobby Lobby.

Didn't have a lot of sewing time this past weekend, we went to see Rango on Sunday. My GS and DD were disappointed that it wasn't in 3D but I enjoyed it. Just a note, there were several small children that were freaked out by the animals in the movie so you may not want to take weeones to see it.

Hopefully my semi-unselfish sewing will bring good vibes my way and I will get something accomplished this weekend.

Throwback Weekend

I spend this weekend playing Sorry and shooting marbles with my GS, he won Sorry but I kicked his butt in marbles, that's old school they don't know nothing about marbles. So no sewing but I'm not complaining.

I did have an awesome sew date on President's Day and made my very first bag, purse or tote whatever you want to call it. My co-worker's Mother makes the most awesome purses for her daughters and said she would help me make a new knitting/crochet bag. There's ton's of mistakes all my fault but I'm still thrilled with it and plan to make more purses. I got the fabric from Hobby Lobby, it's a home dec remnant and I was able to find a coordinating fabric remnant for the pockets.

The most important requirement was that my needle case fit. I made this over a year ago but I love it.

Inside of the tote, (I guess that's what I'll call it) as you can see my needle case fits fine with lots of room for projects, magazines and books. There's still a few finishing touches. I want to get snaps for the inside pockets and a zipper pull.

I also managed to finish one sock. This is my second attempt at making socks and I'm much happier with this one, hopefully the second one comes out as good.

Old sock on the bottom, I was in desperate need of new socks.

I don't think I will ever purchase another pair of socks, they never fit my huge cankles, these do.

This is the best book on knitting socks I've found, the instructions are really easy to follow. I'm still perfecting the dreaded Kitchener stitch.

I made the magic stripes socks. I think I will branch out into something more adventurous for the next pair.

The last couple of week's have been spent fighting a cold but I'm never to sick to knit or crochet. This neck warmer is for my friends upcoming birthday, along with some reading mitts and a hat.

This is a free pattern on Raverly.

Couldn't make just one pair, the black pair is for my DD, the pink for my niece and the blue are mine.

No sewing but I'm dreaming of Spring.

Sewer's Block

That's the only reason I can come up with why this isn't finished. It's coming along great but I'm so unmotivated. All that's left to do is add the lining, buttons and hem it. Maybe next weekend.

A co-worker request a crocheted hat for her newborn, the first one looked too big so I made a much smaller one, one of them has to fit.

I made another caplet with the boucle and bernat super saver yarn, came out great just like the first one. These are really warm and work great when running errands.

Of course I had to make a matching hat, it's the slouchy tuva beret again I used the coordinating beige on two rows cause I'm a matchy, matchy kinda girl.

Well that's it for me, please send some sewing vibes my way so the Simplicity 2508 jacket will get done soon.

Dueling Mojo's

I finished the Transverse Cardigan from the Spring 2010 Interweave Knits. I lengthened the body, changed the sleeve length and added the garter stitch neckline. I would have liked it a little longer but other than that I'm very happy with it. While watching Knit and Crochet Today, a knit designer said that the biggest mistake knitter's make is following the pattern, I couldn't agree more, coming from a sewing background I never hesitate to change a pattern to suit my taste.

Love the toggle buttons, you have no idea how long I debated buttons but once I saw these against it the decision was made. The pattern calls for two large buttons I wanted three.

I also added a snap at the neckline.

I used the same lining fabric that I'm using for the Simplicity jacket to make a button band.

Despite my knitting mojo being in full throttle, I did manage to make progress on Simplicity 2508 and with another day off I should be able to finish it.

Patch pocket, I didn't cut the flap on the bias, doh.

Down to the KnittyGritty

I added a few rows of garter stitch for a more finished neckline and hope to duplicate the cuff garter stitch detail on the bottom but as you can see that little ball of yarn on the side is all I have left. The yarn is Premier Merit 100% wool, I got it on sale at Hancock's for .69/skein. Now that the Transverse Cardigan is blocking...

I can get back to this, Simplicity 2508. There have been some awesome renditions of this jacket, starting with Opal's two years ago, can't believe it's been that long but she posted it on November 5, 2009, she's been silent for far too long, we miss you Opal.

Close up of the fabric, I'm not copying the fabulous EricaB who just finished an amazing herringbone jacket although that's never a bad ideal. I've had this fabric for at least two years and it's time has finally come. I recovered from a potentially disastrous cutting error, which I'll come clean about once it's finished.

I'm looking forward to seeing many wonderful creations over this long weekend.

Can't get off the PJ train

After making the crocheted slippers for Gwen I was worried because they can be slippery so I made these matching slippers and they were so darn cute I just had to have some for myself.

Back to JoAnns for this fabric.

And a few hours later I'm not jealous anymore.

This is the cascade beret, a free download from Raverly I used the wrong yarn but it still came out nice.

Slouchy tuva beret, a co-worker requested a black hat but then changed her mind to winter white, she waited a long time for this hat so maybe she'll get both.

Finally a mobius cowl, I've wanted to make one of these since I first saw the pattern, very easy once you get the cast on, finished it in one evening. Yarn is Lion Brand homespun.

One more day off, let's see what develops. I hope everyone had a great New Year's Day.

Jamming Jammies and how not to pay 12.00 for Slipper Soles

McCalls 4979, these will be for my friend Gwen, the bottoms will be plain brown flannel.

Side view, don't you just love it when a good plaid comes together, I know this isn't really a plaid but I just wanted to say that, anywho the pattern matched up great.

I'm crocheting these slippers to go with the pj's, the yarn is lion brand suede turquoise and red heart brown. Read on to see how I figured out how not to pay 12.00 for slipper soles. I purchased a pair and they were fine but they were 12.00 freakin dollars.

I'm sure most of you scrapbooker's have several pairs of these handy hole punchers around.

Use those handy hole punches to make holes in the non-skid stuff you can get at any fabric store, sew on with sock weight yarn or embroidery floss and wa-la slipper soles for very little money. I would like to try and find this in a different color but I have also used the eyeglass cleaner cloth that you can find at most $1.00 stores.

After making all those pj's for the boys I knew I wanted a pair, never mind that it was a Mens/Boys pattern. I would much rather have a pair of fleece pj's that are decent enough to leave the house in than a snuggie. I've made many, many snuggies but never for myself. I have enough blankets. I almost forgot please meet Molly, I finally received a dress form from my DD for Christmas.

Speaking of my DD, here she is modeling her jacket. Please excuse her hair she said she's going to get a New Year's Weave lol. She's still cute as a button.

Another 4-day weekend is on the horizon and I hope to do some serious sewing for myself. I wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year.

I finished my DD's jacket, it came out great much better than mine.

Inside out.

I used 1 inch elastic for her cuffs instead of the 2 inch, I like it much better.

I couldn't find any cording that I liked so I knit an I-cord.

After seeing the boy's robes last year their Mom requested one, it only took a year lol. McCalls 2476.

Fleece from Hancock fabric Black Friday sale, 1.99/yd, wish I would have bought more.

This is on my needles, about half way there.

Let it Snow and other happenings

I think he would sled until his toes fell off.

Couldn't get through a Christmas without an appearance of Simplicity 3042, my old standby. These went to California so they're flannel not fleece. Fleece and LA don't mix. I just used scraps but they came out really cute and festive.

I've been knitting up a storm, another slouchy beret was requested but I made so many last year I'll spare you the pic. I made this caplet loosely based on a free pattern. I used variegated boucle and black red heart.

Love the way this came out. It's very warm and was pretty quick, I used size 15 circular needles and bound off with 17's. Now I know what to do with all that boucle yarn I bought. The red heart along with the boucle worked out great. I received a lot of compliments.

One last Christmas present for my DD, this is McCalls 5981, it's the same pattern I used for my purple "Barney" jacket. I also made myself a jacket out of the same fabric about two years ago. I added belt loops because I learned on mine that a belted jacket without belt loops is annoying.

This is the third time I've made these and just noticed that my pocket placement was way off on the other two. I doubt the 10 and 12 yr. old boys I'm making them for will notice but I have plenty of time to move the other one.

Yep, that's more of the brown stretch knit and I'm not done with it yet, keep reading.

I was getting a little bummed out sewing for others so I sneaked in this top and then got right back to my unselfish sewing. This is McCalls 6203, view D. I think I still have enough of this fabric for another project.

I made the hat a couple of weeks ago, it's the slouchy tuva beret, the yarn is Red Heart Shimmer.

I'm very happy with my weekend projects, I've made quite a dent in my Christmas PJs and it isn't even December yet.

Let the Sewing Begin

One good thing about not going out of town for Thanksgiving, I did get started on my Christmas projects. This is simplicity 2318, one down three to go. The brown stretch knit trim is courtesy of Trudi.

This too is from the Trudi stash, I felt it only fitting to make her DD something from this super cute fleece. The pattern is McCalls 6225, super fast and easy.

I didn't have enough fabric for the belt so I used some of my left over purple fleece.

Another plus is that I went to both JoAnns and Hancock's black Friday sales. I got my free scissors from JoAnns and cleaned up on the fleece at Hancock's, it was on sale for 1.99/yd.

Blue Moon

It must have been because I went to a dance. Here's everybody, we had a ball. Mo wasn't really wearing that hat, it's her husband's, it was raining. I am cheesin' with my party hair.

The Delfonics will make you do this, Jackie's going to kill me.

This weekend was much more sedate. Feeding the ducks at the park.

Not much sewing going on, still trying to jump start my Christmas pj marathon. We won't be going to Texas this year so hopefully I will get a lot done over Thanksgiving.

My dear shopaholic friend gave me a ton of fabric and I immediately cut into this sweater knit. The pattern is Butterick 5251. I've been looking for a sweater knit forever of course Trudi would find it and I have the perfect belt. I hope to get pics wearing it this week.

Barney Jacket

I sewed all day Sunday and was able to finish the McCalls 5981 jacket, it's very purple brighter than the picture but I love it.

Inside out, I lined it with the left over eggplant/deep purple fabric that I used to make the epic fail jumpsuit.

This is a great jacket and I have to thank Gold for the inspiration, after seeing her red version I knew I had to make this, my DD wants one I'm going to try and work on it this weekend and get a jump on my Christmas sewing.

Beside adding the lining I redrafted the collar because I wanted to use the lining fabric for the under collar to eliminate bulk, even with the lining this was still a pretty quick project.

What Grandson wants Grandson gets

I had this all cut out and ready to go, even had both machines threaded but then...

My GS decided he needs some pjs. I guess now is as good a time as any to start the marathon pj session, I know I made him at least 5 pairs last year.

The pattern is Simplicity 2318 and I think this will be my go to pj pattern for the boys this year. Super fast and super easy. I only bought 1 1/2 yd fabric because I intended to only make the bottoms but I found a coordinating remnant in my stash and squeezed out the top, he's happy and I've broken in a new pattern.

Maybe I will be able to start my jacket tomorrow.

First Post in the 5 0 Club

To quote my cousin. Yep, last week was my birthday I'm officially in that club. Can't believe it but thank God for it.

This is Simplicity 2554 view A, I made it last weekend. Fabric from Hobby Lobby on sale for $4.00/yd, that's not much of a sale to me.

Not much sewing going on this week, the only thing I made was this little Kleenex holder for my GS's teacher's birthday. Along with a few other goodies.

I finished this hat and scarf for myself. The yarn was purchased from Hancock for .69 skein, now that's a sale. I used two skeins. The hat pattern is slouchy tuva beret and I just winged it on the scarf.

And I'll leave you with this pic. I took my GS to Halloween Nights at Parky's Farm on Saturday, we had a good time but the lines were insane. It seemed like every Grandparent had the same ideal.

Shades of Gray

McCalls 5522, grey with white polka dots. Which is correct, gray or grey, I'll have to look that up.

While working on this shirt I remembered why I don't often make them, it took two entire weekends for 1 shirt, that's too much of a commitment but I'm very happy with the final result.

I used french seams which came out great.

I don't like doing continuous laps but these came out nice. I think my next project will be something quick and easy. I have some purple fleece for a jacket but today it's in the 80's and I just can't bring myself to cut it out. I'll be happy when Fall finally gets here and stays.

Back in Basic Black

Simplicity 2560 view A, it will have the sleeves from view B when I finish it tomorrow.

I used Simplicity 2603 for the shell.

The pattern didn't call for a button but I had to figure out a way to use this button because it matched the shell perfectly. I can't take credit for the closure idea it's used on one of the many other cardigan patterns I purchased.

The cable sweater is almost finished. I'm adding ribbon to reinforce the front bands before sewing on the clasp.

I'm happy with the way it came out, I used the Shrug This pattern and made the sleeves longer and added the cable to the bottom.

It seems like I haven't posted in forever and life just kept moving right along, my DD turned 28, this is her hang over picture. Yea, the t-shirt it says what you think it does, what can I say, I didn't raise her like that.

My GS is playing football, too cute. They won 32 to zip.

So cute.

I'm so happy to have my computer back, I even have a back-up because that can't happen again.

No sewing this weekend, I've been knitting. I did start on McCalls 5672 but realized that I wanted it lined and I didn't have anything that would work so a quick trip to Joann's was in order. They are literally 5 minutes from my house, JoAnn's is my least favorite fabric store but they did have Simplicity patterns on sale for a buck.

The last thing I need is another pattern but you know what I always say; "I'll buy that for a dollar".

I like the brown one for Fall.

I'm trying to shift gears into Fall sewing. I reviewed what I've made since April and it's quite impressive I really don't need any more summer clothes but I just might squeeze in this pattern, I saw it on someones blog and I have a black/white knit that would be perfect.

Wearing Blue Belted and my Fabric Cue

Rachael requested a picture of me wearing blue belted and you can't disappoint a girl on her birthday. The fabric looks shiny but it isn't.

I really need to start hanging out with my girls more to work on that little muffin top thing.

I tried it with about six different belt/shoe combinations but my photographer was not willing to do all those pics. I will probably wear it with the gray studded belt and silver sandals.

Why do I always cock my head at such an un-natural angle lol.

This was going to be last weekend's project before the A/C died. It's only been cut out for almost a year. My first fall outfit but once the A/C died all bet's were off and I opted for one more summer dress. Maybe this weekend.

This is my fabric cue, really it's just a bunch of fabric piled on a bench. They're all fabrics I don't want to put away and forget so I keep them out until inspiration hits. The hounds tooth will be a fall jacket, I just have to decide which pattern.

I think I want to make the red view out of the purple/eggplant that I used for the jumpsuit, also for Fall.

It Rained, I Sewed

And several other catchy blog titles, how about blue belted. I can't decide which belt to wear with it, this is the belt I made to go with the epic fail plaid dress, it does give the dress a punch of color but I'm not sure if I like it.

Misty Blue, they just keep coming, here it is with a grey studded belt, eh.

Blue belted, I've got a million of them, blue studded belt.

Stuck in the 80's (ok, that's the last one) the pattern is Butterick 4734 circa 1987 with the skirt pieces from McCalls 7787, the epic fail plaid dress. I only had 3 yds of this wonderful mystery fabric and didn't have enough if I used the Butterick skirt pieces both patterns have full skirt views so I figured it would work. I do remember I purchased it from JoAnns, it has some stretch to it and is very soft. Here's a view of the inside, as you can see it's not lined and due to my limited yardage I used a remnant from my stash for the back yoke and pocket facings. My serger was giving me a fit and I couldn't figure out the problem so my seams are less than perfect, it may be time for a tune-up.

I'm extremely thankful for the rain we've had over the past few days even if it did come in the form of some pretty powerful thunderstorms, it helped to cool it down nicely but I will be so very happy to see the heating/cooling guy tomorrow. I remembered that we didn't have air conditioning while growing up and it didn't seem to bother us, now I don't think I could make it through the summer without it, this weekend has been an ordeal.

Not so much anymore, there was a time you could have yelled "Fire!" and I still would have taken the time to apply eyeliner but today I felt like getting all gussied up.

The concert was great, if you like jazz and ever have the opportunity to see fo/mo/deep or Joe Johnson live I highly recommend them.

There's still a little Sunday left I'm going to go see what I can get into.

Most Things Really Are Black and White

This seems to be the case in my closet. Last week I made the black/white maxi dress this week I finally cut the pique black/white fabric which had me wallowing in the valley of indecision.

I was inspired by Trina's black and white peplum top and then I remembered I had this pattern, circa 1988. I remember making this way back then in a loud red floral, I loved it. I really like old patterns the instructions and paper quality was a lot better.

I made view E the last one on the left, I added side pockets to the skirt. Believe it or not I didn't line it, the pique has a very good weight to it and at my age I have the appropriate undergarments so why not wear them.

The only thing that's left to do is add the buttons. I like the ones on the left but I only have two and I need at least three so that means I'll either use the ones on the right or go to the store, my money is on the ones on the right.

Tonight me and my GS will be attending this free outdoor jazz concert, we usually go every year but last year it was the same weekend as Macy's Music Fest so we missed it. They always have excellent musicians, we both really enjoy it and did I mention it's FREE.

Next weekend is the Midwest Black Family Reunion which I haven't attended in years but this year Rose Royce will be performing Saturday night and Sunday Regina Bell, I may just have to make my way downtown. Sing it with me; "get your car wash today, fill up and you don't have to pay", love that movie, it's a classic, Richard Pryor was great in it.

Macy's Music Fest Weekend Review (pic heavy)

FRIDAY NIGHT ROCKED! Teena Marie was awesome I really didn't take any pictures I was too busy having a good time, of course Charlie Wilson shut it down.

Jaheim was also really good but there was a, "things you will probably regret moment" when this woman (I use that term to describe gender only) who was obviously old enough to know better got up on stage and licked his sweaty chest, that's just NASTY! You know that's going to be on youtube, can't you just see how this will follow her. She goes to school for Grandparents Day and all the kids say; "your Grandma is a freak I saw her on youtube" or you don't get that promotion at work because they saw it too.

And then there was Saturday, hum, yeah. All I can say is I'm glad that Frankie was back this year, Raheem Devaugh and En Vogue were both really good, unfortunately we missed K'John. And I don't know what was going on with Ms. Erika I guess she wasn't pleased with our response to her incoherent babble and after about 20 minutes she left the stage, she didn't even sing "Window Seat" WTH. Oh well I've seen her before and she was awesome, everyone is entitled to an off night.
Now on to what I wore. Friday night I wore the eggplant jumpsuit and it became painfully clear why they're not so popular, I had to become a contortionist when trying to use the bathroom. Needless to say I probably won't ever wear it again but the wrap is great and I can see getting a lot of wear from it especially around the holidays with a LBD.

I did manage to finish the maxi dress for Saturday, it's Butterick 5489. I chose this pattern because I thought it would be simple and I could finish it quickly, which would be true if I didn't have to adhere to my sewing knits rule, which is it must be lined. Then I had an issue with the underarm, it was way to low. Thankfully I used a fix I read on someones blog (can't remember who's). I was lazy and didn't cut the extension pattern piece so it was about 4 inches to short to be a maxi I used the black contrast which turned that into a happy accident because it really made the dress. Here I am all hot and sweaty from a night of partying.

All in all it was a great weekend. My DD asked me if I had fun when I said yes, she said "that's good you go out once a year you should have a good time". Technically it's twice because I go Friday and Saturday lol.

I'll be honest I was worried that I wouldn't finish this in time and it's not my best work but am I going to wear it like it is, you bet.

I'm not sure how I will wear the cardi-wrap.

I really like it without the wrap and this Forever 21 belt. (Please don't tell anyone I shop there but you can't beat a $5.00 belt). I omitted the elastic because for one I hate elastic in anything and the belt does the same thing.

I purchased 6 1/2 yards of this fabric because I was going to self line it but I changed my mind and used the rest of the black lining, so you'll be seeing this fabric again and at 2.37/yd I'm not sorry.

For the concert their will be make-up and jewelry but for now I just wanted to grab a pic while I had a photographer. Not sure if I will make the Maxi dress for Saturday night, we'll see.

Pixie Dust Cardi-Wrap

I think everyone who sews has made this cardi-wrap, except me. This was part of my inspiration for my Friday night Macy's Music Festival outfit. I named it the Pixie dust cardi-wrap because the stuff that makes it so shiny also made a big mess.

I've had this fabric for 10+ years, it was initially purchased for a prom dress that never was, I thought it would be the perfect compliment to the eggplant jumpsuit I plan to make. Thanks to Mimi for that inspiration.

Remember this dress I made a couple of weeks ago, I never wore it because it just wasn't working for me, even after I took all that time to make the stupid fabric rose, I just couldn't bring myself to wear it and once again I can thank a fellow blogger for inspiration. The straps she used on her muslin dress made me remember that I had some crocheted lace in my stash that just might be what this dress needed. I think I will wear it now.

Saturday night everyone usually wears white as a salute to Frankie Beverly and Maze, thankfully they will be performing this year but I can't do plain white. Hopefully I will get this finished before Friday. One day I will learn but today is not that day.

I have say Happy Birthday to my girl Mo. The Birthday club didn't disappoint, we take good care of each other. Enjoy.

Last but not least I met one of my followers Saturday morning at Hancock, I apologize I didn't get her name but it was so nice to meet her and her daughter, who is a budding seamstress. I was a little jealous since it appears I've lost the battle trying to get my DD interested in sewing. It was really cool to meet someone who enjoys reading my escapades.

Red Hot

Not me, I'm not that vain anymore lol. The dress is red and it's been hot as Hades for what seems like a very long time. This is Simplicity 3773, the fabric is from Hancock I didn't know it when I purchased it but it's some type of stretch poplin and a little stretch is always good.

This is a terrible picture but I finished it late last night and made my son take a picture because I knew he wouldn't be home today. I actually worn it to work without a belt, it was just to hot to have anything touch me.

This weekend I will be frantically sewing my Macy's Music Festival outfit, wish me luck.

How My Garden Grows

Today I picked my first batch of zucchini and a few more banana peppers. I was beginning to get discouraged because all I could see were the blooms, all I needed to do was look a little closer.

In case you forgot this is how it looked when I first planted everything.

And this is how it looks now. WOW! The zucchini plants are gianormous, I'm still waiting for my tomatoes to turn red.

This is my first attempt at a garden and I'm very thankful that God has blessed it with an abundance.

Now I'm off to make zucchini bread.

Geometic Tunic

That's a really lame title but it's the best I could come up with. This is Simplicity 4190, simple tunic and elastic waist capri's. The fabric was purchased Saturday at Hancock's 40% off sale.

The capri's are black twill that I purchased at JoAnn's months ago.

I didn't have any black seam binding so I cut two bias strips.

This is up next, also purchased this weekend from Hancock's. Initially I was going to make another tunic to wear with the white capri's I made last year but since I've been wearing those out I think I'll make a dress instead.

Perhaps this pattern, I made the top last year, it was super easy.

Yep, Snaps would be my thing

If I were to ever be in any type of sewing competition, I would probably try to put snaps on everything and be eliminated in the first round.

I just love me some snaps. Love the way this came out. The pattern only called for the jacket to be lined but of course I lined the skirt as well. In case you forgot it's McCalls 5817

This goofy pic is to show how well the skirt fits, which it doesn't really do but you'll just have to trust me it fits great.
I'm really happy that I was able to finish this Friday evening because that leaves two whole days to do something else.

BTW, I decided not to frog my sweater because once I looked at the yarn requirements I realized I didn't have enough for the Bernat pattern.

They've Found a Home

Remember all those silver snaps I just had to have for the seersucker shirt dress and then I ended up using the white snaps, they've found a home on McCalls 5817. They look great against the black.

It's rare that I get to sew during the week but I've been taking Nancy Zieman's advice, sewing for an hour or two and I'm making great progress on this jacket. The pattern called for top stitching but the seams were laying so beautifully I couldn't bear to top stitch.

I knew I saw the inspiration for my cable sweater somewhere, this is from a free Bernat booklet for participating in an online survey. I was supposed to only get two booklets but the link didn't work so they gave everybody all 4. I'm really tempted to frog what I have and make this instead.

Decisions, decisions to frog or not to frog that is the question.

A Little Knit, A Little Sew, A Lotta Snooze

I read on someones blog that cable sweaters will be all the rage this Fall/Winter so I started on my own version. I couldn't find a pattern that I liked so I'm winging it, the general idea is nice fat cable at the bottom, seed stitch front band and that's about as far as I've gotten. The yarn is Lion Brand Jiffy. I read that knitter's hate to have to pick up stitches, I found it to be quite easy by using a crochet hook and then sliding them onto my circular needle.

It's the same yarn I used to make this self drafted v-neck pullover, this was crocheted before I learned to knit. I love this sweater, I used double-ended crochet hooks for the ribbing to get that knitted look. It's very warm without being suffocating.

I'm almost finished with the McCalls 5817 skirt, I really like the two back vents and contoured waistband.

My son will be 19 tomorrow, I can't believe it. Happy Birthday Kendall. The pic on the left is him in probably the only outfit I made for him when he was small. Black velvet knickers and a bow tie that matched his sister's Christmas dress. They grow up much to fast.

Light Sabers and SlipNSlide

He looks like the big fight scene in The Last Airbender, which BTW I don't recommend it was a bit of a snoozer. We went out to Kings Island to see fireworks, Grandma caved but this picture is totally worth the $7.00.

If there wasn't a slip n slide during your wonder years I feel a little sad for you.

Didn't get any more sewing done and since I'm waffling terribly on what to do with the pique I just moved on to another project. This fabric is black linen-look from Hancocks, love linen hate the wrinkles.

I'm doing view B/C shirt/jacket.

Speaking of the valley of indecision pique fabric this was my latest maybe, I was considering (red/black view) use white for the top, print with black piping for the waist inset and the black for the skirt, what do you think, it's definitely an 80's pattern but I kinda like it. I did make this during the 80's and wasn't crazy about it but I think it was poor fabric choice and not the pattern.

Too Much Knit to Quit

This is Simplicity 3536 as a dress. I've made almost every view of this pattern and after wearing the top today I decided to make a dress using one of the first knits I purchased this summer.

I know it's July, it took that long for me to decide what to do with this fabric, I knew I wanted a dress but couldn't decide on a pattern. Of course I lined it, with a very thin knit from Hancock 1.95/yd.

I felt it was a little plain so I made the fabric flower, it probably took me as long as it did to finish the dress to get it right.

Nothing says summer like a new bike, last Sunday I got my GS a new huffy, he was thrilled. Yep, I'm definitely in the running for Grandma of the year.

I know I was supposed to be working on the Sandra Betzina pattern but I think I may do something different with that fabric, every woman knows it's our prerogative to change our mind and that's certainly true with sewing.

Real Quick, Real Easy

For me that always means a knit. This is Butterick 5219, I made this last year and remembered that it was quick and easy, I didn't do the bottom band so this is a combination of view B and D.

This knit is very thin so I lined the top, I don't want to have to hunt down a camisole every time I want to wear it.

I believe that God performed the loaves and fishes miracle on this knit tricot fabric I purchased in Texas two years ago, I have used it countless times and there always seems to be just enough however I think this is the last of it, I only had enough for the top half but that's what needed the lining anyway.

This weekend has been crazy busy. My Aunt Vicky's bus trip to Canada stopped here on the way there and back, when they arrived here Sunday night I had to take her friend to the ER because she cut her foot in TN and needed stitches, they couldn't go to the hospital in TN because the bus would have left so they waited until they got to Cincy. Thankfully the ER wasn't the usual nightmare and we were able to get in and out in less than 3 hours. Also my friends from South Carolina were in town, which meant a lot of cooking but it was so worth because he was able to install my new ceiling fans in the basement for free, I had an estimate from Handyman Connection for over $200.00. Thank God for good friends.

McCalls 6688 is finished and I love it.

Inside out view, I lined it with white broadcloth because it worked so well with the dress and the top, very cool and comfortable in warm weather.

I am terrible with mirror pictures, thankfully my GS came home and was my mini photographer. I went with a fabric tie but the white shows the tie detail.

As you can or I should say can't see the fabric tie blends in.

We had free tickets to the zoo on Friday. LJ had the peacocks eating out of his hand.

It was and still is sweltering here, tomorrow we're going to the water park, should be a good day for it and since the zoo ruined my hair for the weekend, why not.

This is next weekend's project. I purchased this black and white pique fabric on sale at Hancock for the vest and solid black pique for the walking shorts. I may take a few inches off the collar it looks like it might be a bit much.

While getting this fabric cut a lady asked me what I was going to make, I told her a Sandra Betzina pattern and asked had she heard of her, she said that she has met Sandra Betzina in person on several occasions, I asked her if she was nice because I just couldn't stand it if she was a snob, the woman said that Sandra Betzina is very nice.

Real Life Conversations

Me: Come take a picture I didn't get any last week because you weren't home.

DS: Ok, Um Mom I'm going to be a hater but that's not the best dress you've made.

Me: You don't like it? It's the colors they're too much aren't they?

And with that and this rear view picture it was decided this dress would be donated, however if anyone would like it, it's free to a good home. I cut a size 14 and as you can see it's a bit snug across my junk but I really do love the belt I'll have to try that again.

Thanks for all the lovely comments but I've raised my kids to be brutally honest and he pretty much confirmed my reservations. Oh well they can't all be winners.

Nothing to do but chuck it and move on, I was going to cut this out but decided to do the madras disaster instead. I'm doing the blue pantsuit, with the back drawstring.

I decided to make a matching belt. All that's left to is hem it and add the covered buttons.

A Little of This, A Little of That

I can't tell you how happy I am to be done with the Vogue two-toned shell and it's wearable lol.

I made the skirt last year. You can see one of the many mistakes, when I changed from circular to straight needles I somehow ended up with gartner stitch instead so stockinette, I decided to leave it.

I also finished another version of Butterick 5046. This is the same type of sheer fabric as the "cloud top" I used the left over lining from the black (funeral) dress.

Love the button.

And lastly I put down a new floor in my half bath, it's peel and stick carpet tiles from Home Depot on-line, they don't have them in the store. This bathroom has been flooded on more than one occassion so I wanted to find something that wouldn't be such a big deal to replace. I really like how it came out. I cropped it to save you to picture of the toilet and trash can, it's a really small bathroom.

Something for Him, Something for Her

It's been almost 6 months since I made my GS a pair of PJs so I whipped these up last night, they are my old standbys Butterick 3042.

I've had this fabric for at least 15 years, it's very light weight perfect for summer PJs.

My DD requested this after trying one on in Wal-Mart that didn't have pockets. I think that was just her excuse to have me make it. I have bolts of this fabric from my Wal-Mart stash, I think it was .97/yd. The pattern is McCalls 6083, view A. Don't look to closely I did a terrible job on matching the plaids but she likes it anyway.

I did cut out another top for myself, it's another version of McCalls 6031, in a pale yellow. I don't think it will make the Memorial Day sewing marathon but I can't complain I got a lot done this weekend.

Chadwick Knock-off

I wanted to make this as soon as I saw it in Chadwick's. I didn't obsess over matching the plaids like I usually do, it's just a simple summer top but they match up where it matters. The pattern is Butterick 5465, view A modified of course.

The fabric was gifted to me by Ms. Peggy last year. This is my first time using the Dritz eyelet kit. It's a little unnerving putting holes in something you just spend an hour making but they came out okay, just remember to use a very small hole, you want it just large enough to get the eyelet through.

The garden is in and planted.

Grilling out today so I can have tomorrow to sew.

Ready to Plant

I was determined to have a garden this year. I made a raised garden bed using some old 4X8s. I will have to put up some netting or else it will just be a buffet for the rabbits. Gardening is hard work I really hope I have something to show for it.

I have tomatoes, zucchini, red and yellow bell peppers, green beans and cilantro, I may go get a few more herbs.

If any gardening experts out there have any tips they will be welcome I need all the help I can get.

It Worked

Today it's nice and warm, really warm. Love the dress, it took a lot of tweaking to get the straps right but I think it was worth it.

It occurred to me that I tend to stick to the same color palette. I made this zipper pull to match a maxi dress I made last year and it matches this dress too. I don't think I will wear it like this to work, it's a bit to much bling.

Inside view, love the color of the lining, reminds me of a cool Caribbean ocean.

Didn't get to the jacket but next weekend is a long one and I hope to get a ton of summer sewing done.

Coming Along Nicely

After a week of strep throat and almost constant thunderstorms I hope this dress will help bring on the promised summer like temps.

It's Simplicity 2926, view D, I added the piping from view A. All I have to do is add the skirt lining, zipper and hem it. I purchased a solid coordinating fabric to make a jacket since it's always freezing at work.

But I tried it on with this jacket I made last year and it works so I may or may not make the jacket this weekend. I think I've worn this jacket maybe twice so it would be nice to get some wear out of it.

I've made a lot of progress on the Vogue shell, maybe just maybe I can finish it this weekend. It will look great with a skirt I made last year.

I use to work from home several days a week now I go into the office most days and it has been a huge sewing motivator, I have somewhere to wear my clothes.

Grandma Days

I'm not sure how many more years my GS will think it's cool to hang out with me so I sprung for Kings Island passes, we always ride the Carousel, usually the last ride before we get our must haves and leave for me that means a funnel cake.

It was cloudy and rainy all day but I couldn't resist a pic in his new sunglasses.

I even managed to finish McCalls 6031, this was supposed to be one of my Spring Month of Tops better late than never.

The fabric is a 1.00/yd stretch knit from Hancocks, love the color and I don't know why I waited so long to make a brown pair of pants, I love them and wear them often.

No Sewing but a lot of Love

If I knew how to do a strike through it would say no successful sewing, this is McCalls 5522 and I cut a generous size 12 and I can't even begin to get it closed. I think I may finish it for a tiny co-worker. Speaking of co-workers and going slightly off topic, while discussing our Mother's Day weekend, a woman said, she got the best Mother's Day gift ever, everyone said, "Oh really what did you get" and no lie she said with a straight face; "my son gave me a RAT, I named her lulu". Seriously, a live rat and this isn't just a little weird to you. It takes all kinds but nobody better ever give me a rat for Mother's Day or any other day; they're called vermin for a reason.

I received many heartfelt cards and my DD's standard Mother's Day balloon lol.

And this beauty from the world's greatest neighbor's.

After my sewing let down I moved to a different craft, I have swatched this tank top about 90 times, only a slight exaggeration, the 9 row lace pattern kept mocking me and my gauge was horribly off, after some serious Tanya math, I finally got my gauge worked out and completed the lace pattern, yipee! Hopefully I will finish this before Summer is over.

I Really Missed My Kids

And my sewing machines. Last weekend was awful, my heart goes out to the family, it was such a tragic senseless lost. I was really happy to be home and you can bet I gave my kids and GS a lot of kisses and made sure to tell them I love them.

I really needed to sew this weekend, I've wanted to make this skirt for quite awhile and finally got around to it, it's my own vintage pattern, meaning I purchased it back in the 80's it's Butterick 5863. I made the jacket and top but never the skirt.

I don't know why I waited but maybe it was until I had this belt, it goes great with the skirt. The fabric is cotton twill from JoAnns.

I have the blouse cut out and waiting, maybe I'll get to it before next weekend.

Now I'm off to see what everyone else has done with their weekend.

Butterick 5115 - Modified View D

It's finished. I was trying to get a picture of the shoulder shaping but you'll just have to trust me when I say it's awesome.

I need to take photography lessons, I'm terrible at photographing black.

A little tip, I used a purchased shoulder pad but it was much to wimpy so I sandwiched it between two thin pieces of batting, covered and sergered. I was afraid they might look a little 80's ish but I think they're just what this dress needed. As you can see I used what I had to shape the shoulder pad.

Warning--Project Runway Rant!

I am so over Project Runway, WTH, Emillio should have won that hands down. I don't think I will watch it again, I'm just too distraught.

Looks Like I'll Make It

There's still quite a bit to do but I'm sure I can have it finished before Saturday morning.

I have to do the shoulder shaping, sleeve heads/shoulder pads, buttons and hem it. I didn't include the flaps, didn't see the point nor will I add buttons to the sleeves, especially since I couldn't find any that I liked that wouldn't break the bank, I will be doing covered buttons.

After the black dress, (I refuse to call it the funeral dress) this happy Spring fabric will be just what I need.

Please excuse the blurry pic, but I plan to make the view with the print. Haven't decided on a jacket pattern but it will be something simple.

I will try to post a picture of the black dress before I leave but if not I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures when I get back.

This morning I was itching to get started on this. I made the suit sometime in the 90's, before digital cameras, I used a forest green (which was really popular in the 90's) with a pretty floral for the collar, it came out great. I stayed up all night working on it because I wanted to wear it to lunch with a client, I got a lot of compliments on it.

This time I'm making the dress (view D), then I got a call from my dear friend Gwen asking me to accompany her to a funeral, what a terrible coincident. In any case now I'm in a hurry to get this finished before Friday. Which wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't so anal. I'm showing the front pattern piece here because I learned the hard way when making this type of dress to add a few inches so it doesn't gap when you sit down, I think this tip came from Sandra Betzina. Of course it will be fully lined and every seam finished, you know I'm anal right?

This simple Butterick 5046 top took forever, funny it's a fast and easy, not if you're me. Since it's another sheer fabric I wanted to line everything except the sleeves. Even though it's lined I finished the seams of the sheer fabric with a french seam and serged the lining seams, which was left over broadcloth from the shirt dress, which washed beautifully BTW.

Pas vous amour juste une couture française, that's french for, "Don't you just love a French seam." I don't speak French I found the translation here. I also did a rolled hem. I still have to add the buttons and hem it, I couldn't decide 1 or 2 buttons, shank button or not, anywho I need to finish this so I can start on the dress because this top will be perfect for April in Arkansas.

I've figured out if I wasn't so anal I could crank out a lot more but then I wouldn't be happy with it anyway. So I guess I'll just be happy with quality not quantity.

No More Blame

It's done and I freakin' love it. Here it is with a white belt, I don't know what I was smoking the studded belt is gray the dress is obviously blue/white.

Without a belt, I will definitely wear it with a belt but the fit is great. I did have to let out the arms a smidge but other than that the pattern was right on. I am becoming a Palmer/Pletsch fan.

I used 14 snaps, the last time I posted something with snaps someone asked for a tutorial, I tried to take a picture of the process but they didn't come out, the biggest thing when working with snaps is your placement, I try it on after every snap just to make sure the placement is correct and with the pearl snaps I use a cloth buffer with the attachment tool, also use a very light hand with the hammer, I've cracked more than a few. I hope that helps and next time I will try to take better pictures.

I Blame Tyler Perry

That's right I'm blaming Tyler Perry because I haven't finished this yet. We went to see "Madea's Big Happy Family" Wednesday night and I haven't worked on this since, I guess it's not all his fault between that and working on my room makeover I haven't had any time to sew.

All I need to do is finish the sleeves, hem it and add the snaps, BTW I think I'm going to go with the pearl ones, even though I did find the silver ones at a different JoAnn's, everyone voted for the pearl ones and you guys are usually right.

So far so good, I lined it with white broadcloth.

I have the same fabric in red/white and plan to make another one, maybe I'll use the silver snaps then. We won't even talk about my Month of Tops, only one done so far and it's not looking good for this weekend.

Oh well, sometimes life gets in the way of sewing.

Shirtdress Drama and some Easter Pics

I switched patterns for the shirt dress, the 1987 version had pretty much disintegrated and then I remembered I had this McCalls 5847. I cut out view C (the red one) but I added the pockets to this view.

I had my heart set on silver snaps and wouldn't you know neither JoAnn's or Hancock had them in stock, really, simple silver snaps and you don't have them, it's not like they go out of style.

Since they didn't have silver I purchased these pearl snaps instead but I really, really want the silver ones, I think either one will go with the shoes I plan to wear it with. So do I try to find them on-line or go with these?

Here I am trying to do a twirl in my kite top, my son says it looks like it will fly away like a kite. I love the way it wears very soft and fluttery.

The boys were very serious about the Easter Egg hunt, last year if their egg had "pick a prize" inside they got to choose a toy.

They knew what was up this year and were intent on finding those eggs.

But McKenzie was just having fun. This picture makes me smile.

A Few Days Off

I took yesterday and today off with plans of getting tons of sewing done. Started the day off right with Apple Spice Muffins, yummy. The link for the recipe no longer works if you would like it let me know and I will post it.

So far this all I have to offer, Simplicity 3786 view D. I made a couple of sheer blouses last year and fell in love with them, this one not so much.

Don't get me wrong, I love the finished product but making this was like trying to sew clouds together, the fabric was very slippery and raveled like crazy which explains why my tucks look so wonky. Anywho this will be my first submission to Faye's April Spring Month of Top's blog.

Hancock's blunder ended up being my blessing, this fabric was supposed to be 9.00/yd with 30% off but the sign said 6.99 with 30% off, I almost didn't buy it until I over heard them discussing this mix up and immediately got in on it, it probably just evens out all the times I've been over charged. I really want to find a print for the top or dress haven't made up my mind yet.

I purchased this fabric last year at Hobby Lobby with a shirt dress in mind; yesterday I found this belt at Forever 21 (don't tell anyone I still shop there) I really want to make this shirt dress Butterick 4734 which I've had forever, can't decide on short sleeves or sleeveless, buttons or snaps, this is what makes sewing fun, since the belt is studded I'm leaning towards silver snaps.

I have been trying to make this pattern forever, maybe Faye's sew along will make it happen.

Picked up a couple of stretch knits to make some quick summer tops.

Send good sewing vibes my way, time is quickly getting away from me and I have my Easter cooking/baking to do.

Wearing 5450

You never really know until you wear it, this ridiculous pose shows the sleeve width, plenty wide enough wouldn't you agree. I really should have taken a rear view so you could see I figured out how to tie the blouse without them showing but as my son reminded me it was 7:00 in the morning. I lengthened blouse about 1 1/2 inches and raised the neckline which prevented the gaping issue I read about in one review.

It ties under the blouse in the back which is fine until you go to the bathroom, you have to remember those ties or they could end up in the toilet, not a well thought out design. The pants look a little Steve Urkelish, the last time I made them I lengthened them about 4 inches and had to cut almost all of it off but I wish I had left a little more length, they're fine with heels but today wasn't a heels kinda day and I don't have that much of a hem, I could take it out and add hem tape.

After all that you would think I don't like it but I do, I think one of things I like most about blogging is sharing the pattern issues we find, we're all way too hard on ourselves but if it helps someone else I think it's worth it.

Perplexed

I finished McCalls 5450 (stitch and save) and I cannot for the life of me figure out how it is supposed to tie.

The pattern envelope doesn't show any exposed ties, which is why I choose this view but I'm baffled as to how this is accomplished, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The few reviews I found on pattern review showed it tied in the back and I guess this works but it's not the look I was hoping for, I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing so I hope blog land can help me out.

The sleeves were circus like huge, I probably removed at least 6-8 inches and there's still a decent amount of flounce. Other than not being able to tie it I'm really happy with the way this turned out, the fabric is really easy to work with and I love the colors.

Another pair of Butterick 5222, in brown to wear with the untieable top, I think I can officially call this my TNT pants pattern.

The pattern is not lined but I think pants are so much more comfortable if they are so these and any other's that I make will be lined. I can't remember where/when I purchased this lining but it's silky soft.

This is cut out and waiting but I don't think I will start it until next week.

Weekend Wrap

What an incredibly busy weekend. So let's get started, I decided to paint my spare (Grandson's) room. This room was a nursery when we moved in and soon after my Grandson was born so I just left it. Well today he turns 7 so it was way past time to paint.

I'm terribly color phobic so I will probably never paint a room a big bold color, this is celery ice, love it. I plan to get a new bed, carpet and other misc stuff before I can call this room complete. I'm really proud of the paint job, painting was the easy part, patching holes and taping off took forever; my Grandson helped me paint, he is such a little worker bee, doesn't flinch at anything and he does great work as you can see. My DD's friend said she was sure I broke some child labor laws lol.

It was his birthday weekend so I had to squeeze in some fun couldn't make him work all weekend, we did the Make It Take It at Michaels, he enjoyed making his chick.

His birthday party was at the skating rink, my gift was new skates, and you can bet they're old school, two wheels side by side, no in-line skates. This is him and his little brother-from-another-Mother.

My friend called to say she found a huge spool of yarn at the flee market for $15.00 and did I want one I said of course but couldn't imagine that she would bring me a life time supply. I told her this yarn will probably out live us both.

Susie Serger Saves the Day

I know, I know that has to be the corniest title ever, it was going to say "Captain Serger" but that just didn't seem right. If I didn't have a serger this top would definitely be a "wader".

After browings my patterns, I decided on Simplicity 2852, view E, there were several contenders but in the end I choose this one because I though it would be the easiest to self line and would transistion well into Spring. This fabric is paper thin and was horrible to work with, I knew it would need to be self lined when I purchased it but for .95/yd no big deal right.

I know I've posted about my database during the design/implementation phase but I just have to say how much I love it. I know it's not for everyone you need to be an above average geek but this is what I do and I love being able to filter for a specific pattern type or just click through and see what's available. They're all filed numerically in my file cabinet, makes everything very handy. The hardest part was the inital upload now I make sure I add new patterns as I purchase them. Speaking of new patterns....

These two are dualing to be my next project, the black and white is houndstooth, it looks like a check in the pic. Can't make up my mind, what do you think?

I was so done with the top I had no desire to model it hopefully I will get pictures soon. The pants look red in the photo but they're actually rust colored.

A decent pair of pants. Butterick 5222, I think I've finally worked out all the kinks.

I did have a problem with the waistband, it was gaping in the back, I added elastic and it fixed the problem. The fabric is gifted corduroy, circa unknown but I love the color, which shows better in the first picture.

My .95/yd fabric is begging to be made, I think it compliments the pants perfectly, don't know if it will happen today.

I've come to the conclusion that Spring/Summer is my favorite time to sew. It seems as though I crank out complete outfits effortlessly, this Winter has been a struggle. I don't think I'm alone here, the massive amount of snow and frigid temps has wreaked havoc on my mojo. Spring is right around the corner and I already have my first Spring project cut out and waiting.

Not Much Going On Here

This is the only sewing I got done this weekend but it was well worth it, yep you guessed it another snuggie for my friend Christine's birthday. She likes to say she's in reverse menopause because she's cold all the time, this should keep her nice and warm.

I did cut out another pair of pants using Butterick 5222, I really hope I can work out all the fitting issues this time. Scored some .95/yd fabric at Hancock to make another cowl neck hopefully next week will be better.
